I expected them to be boring. Instead they read like the missing backstory to the entire Bible.
By Rebecca M.I'll be honest with you. When I first heard there were 22 books “removed” from the Bible, I rolled my eyes. I assumed it was clickbait — some fringe conspiracy dressed up to sell something.
So I decided to actually read them. All of them.
I'm three weeks in and I still haven't fully recovered. What I found didn't contradict my Bible. It completed it — like someone had handed me a novel with a third of the chapters torn out, and I'd spent my whole life not knowing they were missing.
Fair warning before you keep reading: you can't un-know this. Once you see what these books say, you'll never open your regular Bible the same way again. Here's what I found.
Your Bible mentions, almost in passing, that the “sons of God” came down to earth (Genesis 6). Two verses. Then it moves on.
The Book of Enoch tells you the rest. Two hundred of them. Called the Watchers. It names their leaders. It tells you exactly what they came down to do — and what they taught mankind that was never supposed to be taught.
Your Bible cut the story off. Enoch finishes it.
Genesis 6:4 says, cryptically, “There were giants in the earth in those days.” And then — nothing. No explanation. No origin. Just a sentence that raises a hundred questions and answers none of them.
The removed books give you the entire account: who fathered them, why they were a catastrophe, and what happened to their spirits after the flood. That last part is the piece that genuinely unsettled me.
Most Christians can name one, maybe two archangels. Enoch gives you the full order — their names, their assignments, who stands before the throne and who is sent to bind what.
Your Bible names a couple in passing. The removed books give you the whole command structure of heaven.

This is the one that kept me up. Enoch describes being taken up and shown things — the storehouses of the stars, the places prepared for judgment, and a sweep of history that reads like it was written looking backward from the end.
Your Bible tells you Enoch “walked with God and was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). One verse. The removed book tells you what he saw while he was gone.
The Book of Jubilees retells Genesis and Exodus — but with the dates, the calendar, and the generations that your Bible summarizes and skips. Whole stretches of years that Genesis compresses into a single line are laid out in full.
If you've ever read Genesis and felt like time was jumping ahead without you, Jubilees is the missing map.
Here's the one that made me sit back. The Book of Jasher is referenced by name inside your Bible — Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18 both say, essentially, “is this not written in the Book of Jasher?”
Your Bible cites it as a source. And then that source was removed. How do you quote a book and cut it in the same canon?
There's a gap between the Old and New Testaments — roughly 400 years where, in most Bibles, nothing is recorded. The “silent years.”
1 and 2 Maccabees fill that silence: the revolt, the desecration and rededication of the temple, where the festival of lights comes from. The bridge between Malachi and Matthew was there all along. It was just taken out.
2 Esdras contains a series of visions about the end of the age — questions put directly to heaven and the answers that came back. Reading it, you understand why some men in a council room might have decided it was easier to leave it out than to explain it.
The Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs records what each of Jacob's twelve sons said to their children before they died — their confessions, their warnings, the sins they begged their descendants to avoid. It's the human heart of the whole family Israel came from, and it's not in your Bible.

Sirach and the Wisdom of Solomon are among the richest wisdom writing of the ancient world — sitting right alongside Proverbs in tone and depth. For centuries they were in the Bible. Then, in many editions, they simply weren't anymore. Most people never noticed they were gone.
Not every removed book is about angels and giants. Tobit is an intimate story of ordinary faith, family, and providence. Baruch speaks from the heart of the exile. They round out a picture of the faith that the trimmed-down canon flattens.
