31 Years Of “Nobody Really Knows.” Here Are The Real Answers.

The five cards from my shoebox, front and back, with the page Tesfaye opened under each one, printed exactly as it reads. Including the two I didn't answer in the post.

What he said at the coffee pot

If you skipped the post, here's the short of it. I pastored the same church for 31 years. Every Wednesday night, people dropped questions in a wooden box, and I kept every card. When I finally read them back, 214 cards were about the same handful of verses. And under every one, my answer came down to the same thing: nobody really knows.

Then Tesfaye, an 84-year-old deacon from Ethiopia who sits in my back row, laughed at me.

“American Christians worry about adding books. We worry about something different… Missing pages.”Tesfaye, at the fellowship hall coffee pot

Here are the five cards. Front, back, and the page he opened.

Who were the Nephilim in Genesis 6?

My note

Nobody really knows. Some say kings.

Here's all Genesis gives you. Every Bible has this verse:

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”Genesis 6:4

Four verses, and the story moves on. Here's the page Tesfaye turned to.

THE BOOK OF ENOCHCHAPTERS 6–7

6 And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.

CHAPTER 7

2 And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants…

3 Who consumed all the acquisitions of men.

4 And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind.

Genesis gives you four verses. Enoch gives you the whole story, with names.

Jude quotes the Book of Enoch. Why don't we have it?

My note

Jude quoted a popular book. Not Scripture. Don't worry about it.

This is the check Tesfaye ran on me. Your Bible on the left. His on the right.

Your Bible · Jude 14–15

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all…”

The Book of Enoch · 1:9

“And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of ⌈ His ⌉ holy ones To execute judgement upon all…”

Same sentence. Jude didn't say “a story goes.” He said Enoch prophesied. Jude had read this book, and it's sitting in the New Testament for anyone to check.

So why don't most of us have it? Enoch was never printed in the King James, not even in 1611. But it never went away. In 1952, scholars working Cave 4 at Qumran, among the Dead Sea Scrolls, found pieces of 11 different copies of it. And one church on earth kept it in its Bible the whole time: the church in Ethiopia, for something like 1,500 years.

I found that deacon. He's 79 now. I showed him these two verses side by side. He said, “Pastor, I asked you that twenty years ago.” I said, “I know. Here's your answer.”

Where do demons come from?

My note

Fallen angels. Don't dwell on it.

The most honest question anybody ever put in that box. Here's God speaking, in Enoch 15:

THE BOOK OF ENOCHCHAPTER 15

8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling.

9 Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies…

Her name is Linda. She's 71. When I finally read her this, she held my wrist and said, “Nobody has answered that for me in 40 years. I asked three pastors.”

Card 4 of 5

Why were the demons in Luke 8 so scared of the pit?

My note

One of the mysteries.

Read how your Bible talks about it. Every one of these is in the 66:

They begged“And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.”Luke 8:31
They knew the date“…art thou come hither to torment us before the time?”Matthew 8:29
The angels are chained“…he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.”Jude 6

Chains. Darkness. The deep. “Before the time.” Your Bible talks like you already know the story. Here's the story:

THE BOOK OF ENOCHCHAPTER 10

12 …bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is for ever and ever is consummated.

13 In those days they shall be led off to the abyss of fire: and to the torment and the prison in which they shall be confined for ever.

“They were not guessing,” Tesfaye said. “They had heard their sentence. That is why they begged.”

Jesus said the last days would be like the days of Noah. What were the days of Noah like?

My note

Wicked. Like today.

Jesus said it plainly:

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”Matthew 24:37

Genesis tells you the earth “was filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11). It doesn't tell you what that looked like. Enoch does. This is what the fallen angels taught men before the flood:

THE BOOK OF ENOCHCHAPTERS 8–9

1 And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids…

2 And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways.

3 …Barâqîjâl taught astrology, Kôkabêl the constellations…

CHAPTER 9

1 And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth…

Weapons. Vanity. Fortune-telling by the stars. People led astray by knowledge they were never meant to have. “Wicked, like today” doesn't touch it.

And here's the verse that made me put the book down. Peter says what God was doing the whole time:

“…when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing…”1 Peter 3:20

The days of Noah weren't only the days of the giants. They were the days God waited.

The verse that sent me back to Tesfaye: “and also after that”

Read Genesis 6:4 again. “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that.” After the flood. How?

I bought the Book of Enoch by itself to find out. A thin paperback. It told me how it started. It didn't tell me what happened after. Tesfaye laughed: “You bought one room of the house, Pastor. You need the book that tells you what Noah did after.”

That's Jubilees. In the Ethiopian Bible it sits right next to Enoch. Here's chapter 10, after the flood, as it's printed:

THE BOOK OF JUBILEESCHAPTER 10

1 …unclean demons began corrupting Noah's descendants, leading them astray and bringing destruction upon them.

2 Noah's sons approached their father and reported how demons were deceiving, blinding, and destroying his grandsons.

3 Noah prayed before Yahweh his God, saying: ‘God of all flesh's spirits, You who showed me mercy and rescued me and my sons from the flood waters… Extend Your grace to my sons and prevent wicked spirits from ruling over them, lest they destroy them from the earth.

6 Do not allow them to govern the spirits of the living, for You alone possess dominion over them. Let them have no power over the righteous descendants from this time forward and forevermore.’

9 He replied: ‘Let one-tenth remain with him, and let nine-tenths descend to the place of condemnation.’

That's your “and also after that.” Most were locked away. A tenth were not. That's why there were still demons for Jesus to cast out, and why they begged Him not to send them into the deep.

And it's Noah's prayer, for his grandsons, that I've prayed over my own grandkids every night since.

One book alone won't give you that. You need them side by side, in order.

Three witnesses, centuries apart

I checked all of this for a month before I said a word from the pulpit. Here's what holds it up.

A letter in your New TestamentJude quotes Enoch by name, and his words match Enoch 1:9.Jude 14–15
A cave in the Judean desertPieces of 11 copies of Enoch and 15 of Jubilees, among the Dead Sea Scrolls.Qumran, Cave 4, 1952
A church in AfricaThe Ethiopian church kept both books in its Bible, 88 books in all.About 1,500 years
“In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”2 Corinthians 13:1

And in the second verse of the whole book, Enoch tells you who it was for. He says what he saw was “not for this generation, but for a remote one which is for to come.”

“My church did not keep it for ourselves,” Tesfaye told me. “We kept it for you.”

God gave Noah the wood before the rain. He gave Joseph the grain before the famine. And He kept these books for a generation that wasn't born yet.

Week 1Genesis 6, then Enoch 6 through 16, in one sitting at the kitchen table. My wife came down at midnight to ask why the light was on.
Week 2At Wednesday night Bible study I answered a question about Genesis 6 with something other than “nobody knows.” You could hear people put their coffee down.
Week 3I found the deacon from 2003 and showed him Jude 14 and Enoch 1:9 side by side.
Week 4My grandson sent me a giants video. I sent back Enoch 7 and Jubilees 10: “Read the real thing, then call me.” We talked an hour.
Week 6The question box had cards in it again. Eleven of them.
Week 8Linda. “So it's settled,” she said. “He already won.”

Before you order: five honest answers

Do I have to stop using my Bible?

No. I preach from my King James every Sunday. This sits beside it, and it answers the questions your Bible raises and doesn't explain.

Isn't this adding to Scripture?

Nobody is adding a word to the 66. They're all in here, untouched. Enoch is the book Jude quoted, the one found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the one the Ethiopian church never stopped copying. Read it as the book God's people kept, and judge it by the Bible you already trust.

Is this a scam?

Run the 4 checks above on any Ethiopian Bible, ours included. More than 100,000 orders have shipped from California and Pennsylvania, and real people answer the support email.

Is the print small?

No. It's two columns with type bigger than most Bibles. That matters at 63, and it'll matter to you.

What if it isn't what I said?

Read it for a full year. If it isn't what I've told you, return it in good condition within 365 days for a full refund of the price. You cover return shipping.

It's probably for you if

  • You've read Genesis 6 a dozen times and still couldn't tell a child who the Nephilim were
  • You asked a pastor about Jude 14 and were told not to worry about it
  • You've wondered where the demons came from, or why they begged, and got a pat on the hand
  • The grandkids have started asking their questions to a screen instead of to you

Two roads

The Faith Made Ethiopian Bible

You can close this page and keep the short book. It will still get you to Jesus. But the next time somebody asks you who the Nephilim were, or where the demons came from, you'll say “nobody really knows,” and they'll go ask somebody who's happy to tell them anything.

Or you can open the books your own Bible points to, and let the verdict finally come with the trial.

You were handed the short book. Nobody told you it was short.

P.S. Before you believe a word I've said, do what Tesfaye did to me. Open Jude 14 tonight. When the book comes, turn to Enoch 1:9. If they don't say the same thing, send it back.

P.P.S. If you're the son or daughter reading this, and you've watched your mother wear out the same Bible for 50 years with questions nobody would answer: she won't order it. Order it for her house. Hand it to her and say, “Mom, it's the book Jude quoted.”
