I sat there for a second. My own Bible was quoting the book I'd just called fringe.
Fine, I thought — so a faraway church padded its Bible to stand out. Easy to dismiss.
Except the 1947 Dead Sea Scrolls blew that up. Among the oldest biblical manuscripts ever found were fragments of Enoch and Jubilees — the very books I assumed were late additions. They weren't added anywhere. They're ancient. Which meant I had the story backwards: Ethiopia didn't ADD them. Everyone else REMOVED them.

Surely, I thought, scripture itself never points to these things. That would settle it.
It didn't. The Book of Jasher is named directly in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18 — “is this not written in the Book of Jasher?” My Bible cites a book as a source that was later cut out of the canon. I couldn't make that make sense.
My last strong card: the church fathers must have thrown these out immediately.
Wrong again. Early figures like Tertullian and Irenaeus referenced and valued Enoch in the first centuries. These books weren't universally rejected on day one. They were widely read — and then, over time, trimmed away by councils and lists.
